The Other Side of the Tracks

 Synopsis

It's been ten years since a tragic train accident took Josh Stevens' first love, Emily. Now, with the anniversary of that tragic night approaching, Josh finds himself at a crossroads, haunted by a young woman's wraithlike image, caught
somewhere between the world of the living and the dead. Although life has moved on around him, Josh remains numb, unable to let go of his painful past, and this indifference has bred stillness, the perfect place for spirits to roam.

Josh's obsession with Emily is fueled by his daily routines: from the candle-lit shrine that he keeps in his rundown boyhood home to his job tending the brick oven at Trackside Pizza—an old converted railcar turned into a restaurant—just as he did in high school. The distant sound of train whistles and the rumble of wheels as they hurl along the tracks serve as constant reminders of Emily's violent death. But it's the haunting cry of the young woman's voice, calling Josh from beyond the grave—along the tracks, in the woods, throughout his neglected house—and the disturbing visions of her that pose the greatest threat.

Although Trackside Pizza has managed to stay open over the years, business has steadily fallen off and the bills
piled up for sole proprietor Ann McGee—a spiritually-sensitive single mom and part-time tarot card reader. That,
along with Ann's comatose brother, in an expensive long-term care facility, has forced her to sell half the business
to David, a burned-out doctor with a neurotic yet friendly demeanor. As Ann and David prepare for the grand
reopening of Trackside Pizza, Marcy—Ann's twentysomething daughter—struggles to accept her family's moral
and financial burdens. Feeling frustrated with the way things are, Marcy finds refuge in a relationship with her
uncle's nurse.

With his old friend Rusty back in town for their ten year high school reunion, Josh's sad and lonely existence
seems destined to change. Rusty—a Kerouac-like drifter from a more affluent part of town—tries his best to
shake his friend out of his stupor and free him from the memories that haunt him. But his efforts—muscle cars,
beer, and women—are hindered by the arrival of Amelia, a seductive young waitress who bears an eerie
resemblance to Emily. Josh quickly falls for her. But is she just too good to be true? No one other than Josh has
actually met her. Is Amelia a fabrication of Josh's depressed imagination? Either way, Josh remains torn between
an old friend offering life anew, and the spiritual pursuit of lost love.

In the end, will Josh heed his mother's advice and move on—letting go of the past and at last facing what really
happened on the night of Emily's accident? The Other Side of the Tracks looks at life, the afterlife, and the
possibility of an existence somewhere in between—a world where everything is not as it seems…
