The meaning of life, and its corollary issues of God’s plans for the universe, the existence of evil and, simply, why are we here, has plagued philosophers, theologians and regular folks since humans gained the ability to think.

In “Supernatural” the Boys frequently address these ideas, but nowhere are these concerns more directly confronted than in the episodes leading up to the Apocalypse (seasons 4, 5 and 6). Sam, Dean and Castiel agonize over their roles in the on-coming end of days. Dean is the righteous man who falls from grace to break the first seal, beginning the process. As the rightful vessel of Michael the Archangel he is told he is destined, over and over (by Michael, by Zachariah, even by himself in the future), to fight his brother and in so doing destroy the world. Sam, demon-blood infected and the rightful vessel of Lucifer, breaks the last seal to release Satan from hell, allowing him to walk the earth. Over and over, Sam, too, is told he is destined to be the instrument of Lucifer, to play his part in the Apocalypse and in the end of the planet.… Read More

Supernatural: Tribes Scoop from TVGuide’s Mega Buzz

February 19, 2014

Supernatural: Tribes will air its backdoor pilot in the 20th episode of this season and longtime SPN fans will notice more than a few similarities to the original series’ pilot. After the death of a loved one, the show’s protagonist, Ennis, is dragged into the world of hunting and monsters. It comes as no surprise that Sam is far more sympathetic to the wannabe cop than his brother when they run into Ennis working a case in Chicago. And while Tribes lacks Supernatural’s beloved sibling angst, Ennis has his fair share of Winchester-level daddy issues.

In the wake of last week’s emotional Supernatural episode, fandom has been left flailing, sobbing, conjecturing, analyzing – and fighting. I saw a tweet earlier today that said “I think the real challenge of the Hellatus is keeping us fans from tearing each other apart on break.” (Thanks @SPN_ExEm). I think a lot of us try to avoid wank whenever we can, but it’s a part of fandom and it always has been. It was one of the most confusing things for me when we first started researching fandom and I had to take off my rose-colored Utopian glasses and realize that while fandom is one of the most amazing, accepting, supportive, wonderful communities I’ve ever encountered, it’s not without infighting. Writing “Fangasm: Supernatural Fangirls” was a lot of fun, and much of the book is about the joys of discovering fandom, a lot of squee about Supernatural, and a lot more squee about going behind the scenes and discovering what the actors think about the Show and the fans (how could chatting with Jensen, Jared and Misha not be fun??)… Read More
