Chapter One
“What did you think she meant by it?” Sam glanced at his brother.
“Who?” Dean kept his eyes on the road.
They were on on their way to Bobby, the result of an argument on what they should do next. With no new case in sight, Sam wanted to check how was the Crossroad Demon able to tell that the colt was not the original.
Dean had other plans.
”Dean!”
“Sammy, when you have that sum of money falling into your lap, you don’t question it. You go and get more.”
“So what, you’re going to turn that ten grand into twenty?”
“Twenty grand, Sam. I’m going to turn that twenty grand into…well, more than twenty grand.” He turned his head to his brother, smiling.
“What twenty?”
“My ten and your ten-“
“You’re not getting my money.”
“Come on, Sam.”
“Dean, you’re not getting my money. And besides, who says you’re going to win?”
Dean shot him a ‘come on’ look.
“Contrary to what you think, Dean, you can lose.”
Dean looked at him for a few seconds. “You just know how to suck the fun out of everything, don’t you?”
Sam shook his head.
“Okay. You want to go to Bobby? We’ll go to Bobby. But after that, we’re going to Atlantic City.”
“Bela. When she said the we wouldn’t understand.”
“Who cares. The bitch spilled blood. Her own family blood.”
“She doesn’t look like a killer.”
Dean sent him a side glance. “And just how does a killer look?”
“I don’t know, Dean. The way she said it…”
“She killed someone. Of course she’ll sound guilty. She is!”
“I just wish she’d explain.”
“Yeah, well, I wish we’d never have to see her again, so if you want an explanation, use the phone.”
“It’s just…” He didn’t know how to put it.
“Don’t. One of this days all this caring will get you killed.”
“How can you say that?”
Dean turned his head to look at his brother. “She shot you!”
“Yeah, well…” Sam moved in his seat.
“Yeah, well?” Dean shook his head. “The farther we stay from her, the better. Out of sight, out of her gun range, her irritating smile, her cunning, dirty-“
“Okay, okay, I got it.” Boy, did Dean have it for Bela.
“She couldn’t even say thank you, the little-“
“Okay, Dean. I got it.”
Dean shook his head. “If we ever cross paths with her again-“
“You’ll kill her.”
“No.”
“No?”
“No. Death would be too good for her.”
Sam just sighed.
Three long what-I’m gonna-do-to-her hours later; they stopped at a road motel, checking in for the night.

“Bela, dinner is ready!”
“Coming, Mama!”
She takes her seat at the table, reaching for the bowl at the middle.
“Bela, wait for your mother.”
“Sorry, Daddy.”
“So, how was school today?” He rests his arms on the table, leaning forward.
“Boring. Can I just stay at home tomorrow?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because of the law.”
“What law?”
“The law that says that kids should go to school.”
“The law sucks.”
“You know, one day you’re going to miss school.” Her mother places a plate of potatoes on the table, taking her seat.
“Right.” She reaches for the plate, taking a few potatoes.
“I’ll remind you that you said that.” Her mother laughs.
“That’s if I’ll miss school.”
“You will.” Her father smiles, taking potatoes and a piece of chicken. While reaching for the knife, his hand slips. “Ouch. I think I cut myself.”
She raises her eyes to look at his wound before returning them to her plate. “Don’t be such a wuss, daddy. It’s nothing.”
“Elizabeth? What is it? Elizabe-“
She hears the growling. Lifting her eyes from her plate she sees her mother reaching for her dad.
And then comes the scream. She has never heard her daddy scream. She has never heard anyone screaming like that. Frozen, she watches her mother biting her father’s neck. She sees the fear in his eyes, hears his screams turning into gasps, mix with the sounds of growls.
She doesn’t move. She can’t move. She just sits there with wide eyes, as he stops gasping. As the fear in his eyes freezes.
She doesn’t move when her mother turns to her, her teeth shown, sharp, covered with blood. She stares in horror as her mother’s once blue eyes, now red, are staring back at her.
But there is also something else. A spark. Somewhere underneath it all, it is her mama.
And then her mama is gone, and she is met with kind eyes.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. But it had to be done. It had to be done. You’ll be safe now. You’ll be safe now.”
And then he is gone.

Sam woke with a start.
“Having a bad dream?”
He turned to face Dean’s bed. “Something like that. Couldn’t sleep?”
“Been thinking what I’m gonna do with the money I’ll win.”
“Right.”
Dean studied him for a few seconds. “Something you wanna talk about?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.” He turned, his back to Dean, pulling the sheets so it would cover his shoulder.
Who was that little girl?
And why was he dreaming about her?
Dean just stared at the ceiling, unable to go back to sleep. Not after that dream he had.
That little girl… who was she?
And why was he dreaming about her?

She closed the car’s door behind her, letting her head rest back on the driver’s seat, her eyes on the horizon.
Another dead end.
