From Missy Bender to Emma Winchester–Our exclusive interview with Alexia Fast

Alexia Fast first appeared on Supernatural as Missy Bender in season two’s episode, ‘The Benders.’  She recently came back to Supernatural as Dean Winchester’s Amazonian daughter in the episode ‘The Slice Girls.’  Alexia was gracious enough to answer a few of our questions.

WinchesterBros: How did you get the part of Dean’s daughter?  Did it help that you had been on the show before?

Alexia Fast: Supernatural was kind enough to offer me the part of Dean’s daughter, it was a nice surprise. I think having been on the show before, definitely gave them confidence that I could play this role. Once you become a part of the supernatural family they take good care of you.

WB: How was filming now compared to filming The Benders in season 2?

AF: Filming Benders was fun because my character was so openly creepy…I enjoyed jumping out at crew members and making them scream. But in this episode I had a lot to sink my teeth into because at first sight, my character seems like an innocent girl in trouble… before trying to kill Dean. It was nice to play this duality and prey on Dean’s sympathies.

WB: Can you tell us what it was like filming The Benders?  Missy Bender is quite a character.

AF: Being just 13 years old, Missy was the first “evil” character I had ever played. It was a fun challenge to depart from my personality, and try to understand how a little girl could be so dark in nature. I loved my costume and makeup, I thought it was so fun to be covered in grime all day….it was quite the transformation. I remember walking through one of the sets… looking at jars of dead animals, when I passed an old mirror and upon seeing my reflection, screamed like bloody murder. I hadn’t recognized myself. The show really is creepy, even for us actors.

WB: How was it working with Jensen and playing his daughter?  Did he give any suggestions/direction?

AF: It was really fun to see Jensen again after so many years have gone by. He couldn’t believe how much I had grown. I really enjoyed playing his daughter because my character has so many conflicting emotions to deal with. On the one hand, she has been brainwashed to kill Dean and believes she must follow through, but on the other, she really is just a lost little girl who with the right guidance….might have been able to redeem herself. Because my character is so complex, it made Jensen’s choices in the scene much harder….should he kill his only daughter….or risk his life to help her? In a lot of ways my performance choices provoked Jensen’s character, so we had to make sure we got the right balance of innocence, misguidance and vengeance.

WB: You were excellent in Flashpoint’s episode, ‘Perfect Storm.’

AF: That episode was such an emotional one. Was it hard to film? I remember I got to set and the production had decided to switch the schedule around. We only had 1 hour to prep and memorize our big emotional scene where my character Ella has to talk her best friend out of shooting her boyfriend. It was nerve racking, but also a great challenge and I was really happy with the result. Being under that kind of pressure, made me resort to just being in the moment during the scene and I think this made my performance more believable.

WB: Do you have any projects coming up?

AF: I just finished shooting the Paramount feature “One Shot” opposite Tom Cruise and a recurring role on “The Secret Circle.”
